Thesis/theme

The point of this blog is to try to answer the question as to whether people like Lennie (those who are mentally disabled), are really innocent of their actions. In the novel, Of Mice & Men (summary can be viewed here) we see that Lennie is not exactly the brightest man around but he sure is the strongest. This is a dangerous combination for him since Lennie is always killing things and getting George into trouble.

Almost everything he kills follows the same order:

  1. He sees something soft which he likes.
  2. It is usually either fur or hair.
  3. He rubs the hair/fur.
  4. Not knowing his own strength, he rubs the person/animal too hard.
  5. The animal/person then becomes agitated and tries to escape from Lennie's grasp.
  6. Lennie then panics and involuntarily holds on even tighter and stronger; considering Lennie's incredible strength, this can be very lethal.
  7. Lennie then becomes mad and will usually try to quiet down whatever it is he is holding; this always results in death.
  8. Lennie then repents his actions and blames himself harshly.
  9. He immediately seeks help from George who first gets mad but eventually takes care of the problem.
  10. Due to Lennie's long term memory loss, he never learns from his actions and the cycle repeats.
